Artworks & Posters Lion on Cyrk (1978) — Hubert Hilscher
“Lion on Cyrk” by Hubert Hilscher is one of the many posters from the Cyrk series — quite possibly the most internationally recognised poster series from the Polish School of Posters.
Initially commissioned by the Polish State Entertainment Agency during the communist era to promote their circus (in Polish, cyrk), “Lion on Cyrk” has embodied the very quality of the Polish School of Posters era with its painterly gestures, vibrant colours, and thoughtful intent.
Another characteristic of the posters from this era is their vastness in interpretability. The Lion, a powerful figure, has taken the center stage of the Soviet era poster, balancing effortlessly on top of the circus decor. On plain sight, one can see this as the lion performing marvelously, but at the same time, could it be that the lion is guarding against the very existence of the circus?
